News From Ireland, Australia And More

FAN Bulletin #559

April 7, 2006

Dear All,
The news of Bassin’s recently published article is getting noticed around the world. Irish dentists are calling for a halt to fluoridation in Ireland, and Australian activists are planning to use her work to prevent more fluoridation in Victoria. Meanwhile, many letters on this issue -as well as the NRC report - are being sent out to the CDC (see Bob Briggs letter to Dr. Gerberding); US Senators (see George Kroll’s model letter to Senator Kennedy) and to the media (see a letter from Jason Krueger, our latest recruit to the National Dream Team, to the St. Cloud Times, minnesota). There are many others but that’s enough for now.
Please keep up these incredibly supportive efforts. More letters please. This is the time to strike. Remember we must separate the CDC from the clutches of the dental lobby (i.e. their Division of Oral Health) and we must get a Congressional hearing so that proponents can be cross examined under oath.

Govt urged to reconsider fluoridation of water supplies
09:32 Friday April 7th 2006
Dentists are calling on the Irish Government to reconsider the fluoridation of drinking water supplies in light of a new US study linking the practice with bone cancer.
Since the 1960s, fluoride has been added to all public water supplies in Ireland with the aim of improving dental hygiene.
Several groups, including the Irish Dentists Opposing Fluoridation organisation, have been campaigning for an end to the practice for several years, claiming its health effects are unknown.
The IDOF says a new study conducted in Harvard University has now found links between fluoridated water and an increased risk of teenage boys developing osteosarcoma, or cancer of the bone.
The organisation said such links had previously been suspected and its own research had already found that bone cancer levels in the Republic are 40% higher than those in the North, where fluoride is not added to drinking water.

Anti water fluoridation campaigners to use cancer link research
Wangaratta’s anti water fluoridation campaigners will use new research to fight the chemical being added to their water supply.
Protester Norm Ryan says he has new US research linking the chemical to cancer.
He plans to take it to the Victorian Government to stop the chemical being added to Wodonga and Wangaratta’s supplies.
“It has now become journalised, that means that study that was done over in the States is now verified and through Harvard University that fluoride causes cancer,” he said.

3) LETTER TO Dr. Julie Gerberding
The recent NCR report recommends lowering the current 4ppm MCLG for fluoride AND reports on the detrimental effects (health hazards) of ingested fluoride.
Water fluoridation, the deliberate addition of fluoride to public water supplies, is a major contributor to the total fluoride ingested by individuals (many millions) unable to avoid the fluoridated water. In addition to the NCR report, there are many reasons why this practice must be discontinued, or at least halted pending further evaluation of the NCR report. Continuing water fluoridation would be like adding fuel to an out-of-control fire.
Dr. Gerberding, for the public’s protection, please take charge, discontinue CDC’s promotion of water fluoridation and call for an immediate moratorium.
Sincerely,
Robert G. Briggs

4) LETTER TO SENATOR TED KENNEDY.
Dear Senator Kennedy,
On April 6,2006 I have e-mailed to your office a formal request to review the issue of mandated fluoridation of water. The attached information supports the urgency of Congressional review of this issue and of the CDC’s questionable position on this issue.
As you know, the incidence of diseases such as Alzheimer’s, dementia, diabetes, Down’s syndrome, hypothyroidism, kidney malfunction, and osteosarcoma is increasing significantly in the US. According to the recent NRC report, there is evidence that chronic accumulation of fluoride in body tissues can contribute to this problem. Furthermore, all of these diseases are considerably more serious than dental caries and dental caries can be most effectively prevented by proper diet and proper dental hygiene.
Respectfully yours,
George J. Krol, Ph.D.

5) LETTER TO ST CLOUD TIMES, MINNESOTA.
St. Cloud Times, Minnesota,
Letter: Water fluoridation is forced medication

On March 22, the National Academies’ National Research Council released a three-year study evaluating the EPA’s maximum contaminant level for fluoridation. The focus of this report was not to determine if water fluoridation was a good idea, but to determine if American citizens were getting overdosed with fluoride in their daily lives.
But is fluoridation a good idea? Brainerd fought very hard against the concept of artificial fluoridation back when the state mandated that all water supplies become fluoridated in 1970. At the time a Brainerd-based coalition gathered facts and worked very hard on a grassroots level to educate the community about the dangers of fluoride. They cited claims of health dangers including skeletal fluorosis, hip fracture, decreased IQs in children, thyroid gland problems, osteosarcoma, and even Alzheimer’s being linked to an overdose of the fluoride chemical.
Today, these claims are still around. Accredited peer-reviewed research confirms that these are indeed valid concerns.
On the very basic civil liberties level, adding a health “supplement” to the water is a bad idea. Many would consider water fluoridation “forced medication.”
Another fact: Not a single safety test has ever been performed on hydrofluorosilicic acid ’Äî the chemical currently added to 91 percent of all water fluoridation supplies and all of Minnesota’s water. To learn where this form of fluoride originates, I invite you to consult an Internet search engine. You will soon find out hydrofluorosilicic acid isn’t natural - and the only other legal place to use the chemical is a toxic waste site.
