Fan Bulletin #600
June 26, 2006
Dear All,
There have been some exciting developments (see below) with our Second Citizens’ Conference on Fluoride which make it even more important that everyone on our list concerned about ending fluoridation, do his or her best to attend. Failing that - if funds allow - would you consider helping some of those to come who desperately wish to do so but are short on finances.
Here is a plea from someone who attended the First Conference and has worked so diligently in her home state to stop this practice:
Paul..I’d love to come but I need help getting there…is there any generous soul out there who can help… for me, the First FAN conferance was the hightlight of several years… I’m crossing my fingers.. I’m gonna rub a budha belly, light some candles and otherwise call for some very good mo-jo…
Helping some of these highly dedicated people to get the latest information from such a distinguished list of speakers (which is growing as I write) as well as brainstorm the next steps to end this nonsense, could be the most important way that any available extra money you might have would help this cause right now.
To help us plan our help for these folks effectively I would appreciate it if you send your tax deductible donations to me directly at my home address, Paul Connett, 82 Judson Street, Canton, NY 13617. Please make checks out to AEHSP- Help FAN Conference. Another way you can help us is to donate frequent flyer miles. As we are in a heavy flying season we will probably need 50,000 miles per ticket.
As we promised, 2006 has been a very big year for those appalled by the practice of fluoridation. We have already seen the the pubication of the NRC report (March 22); the pathetic response of the CDC to this report (March 28), which demonstrates this agency’s total scientific and moral bankruptcy on this policy, which they promote so blindly and arrogantly; the May publication of Elise Bassin’s findings on osteosarcoma and the recent publication of the paperback version of Chris Bryson’s book (The Fluoride Deception) which contains an excellent up-to-date summary of recent events.
Incidentally, we invited Dr. William Maas, director of the Oral Health Division of the CDC, to present at the conference. He declined. Nor did he offer anyone else from his agency to present to us. He is more than willing to testify before State legislatures which are considering mandatory fluoridation, and safe conference-jamborees organized by the ADA, but sadly he is not prepared to defend his agency’s policy in front of the taxpayers’ who pay his salary.
Full information on the 2nd Citizens’ Conference on Fluoride (July 28-Aug 1, 2006) can be obtained at See: http://www.fluoridealert.org
The conference will provide a tremendous opportunity for people to learn from some of the world’s leading scientists on fluoride - including three members of the prestigious National Research Council (NRC) report. Speakers include:
Dr Kathy Thiessen, an NRC panel member, will be presenting on how fluoride impacts the endocrine system, particularly the thyroid gland. NEW DEVELOPMENT: Dr. Thiessen’s presentation will be augmented by Dr. Jennifer Luke, the British researcher who showed that fluoride accumulates in the human pineal gland and lowers melatonin production in animals.
Dr. Robert Isaacson, an NRC panel member, will detail the growing body of evidence - including his own series of studies - on how fluoride impacts the brain. NEW DEVELOPMENT: we are fairly confident that Dr. Quan Yong Xiang will join this discussion (he is currently sorting out his travel arrangments from China). His important 2003 paper showed that fluoride lowered IQ in children.
Dr. Hardy Limeback, another NRC panel member, will be presenting on how fluoride can damage teeth. NEW DEVELOPMENT: Other dentists opposed to fluoridation - Dr. David Kennedy and Dr. Bill Osmunsen will be explaining (in a panel discussion) why it is that a growing number of dentists are breaking ranks with the ADA on this practice.
NEW DEVELOPMENT: Cathy Justice will be joining Dr. Albert Burgstahler and discuss the poisoning of her quarterhorses by fluoridated water.
The conference will also feature a presentation by Dr. Donald Taves, who authored the NRC’s 1977 report on fluoride toxicity. It was Taves who resurrected the commentary (by Caffey in 1955) on the similarity in the age, sex and anatomical distribution of the cortical bone defects observed in the Newburgh-Kingston trial, and recommended - in 1977 - that osteosarcoma rates in MALES UNDER 30 be examined in fluoridated communities.
Another important speaker at the conference will be Dr. William Hirzy. It is hard to overstate the important role that Dr. Hirzy - who is Vice-President of the Union which represents professional employeees at the EPA’s headquaters in DC - has already played in getting this issue onto the national agenda. Now with the NRC recommending that the EPA lower the MCLG for fluoride from the current 4 ppm and to conduct an health risk assessment to ascertain a new MCLG, Dr. Hirzy’s importance in the upcoming months will be even greater. We will be looking to him and to the other EPA unions to make sure that the EPA does this risk assessment honestly and in a timely manner. With the NRC health effects and exposure analysis on the table, IF the EPA does a scientifically defendable job on this, it must result in a new MCLG lower than 1 ppm and end water fluoridation forthwith. How can we help in this? This is one of the areas we will be brainstorming at the conference.
The conference will be an incredible opportunity for citizens to come together, learn the latest science, and rejuvenate their energies for the important future campaigns ahead.
With the costs of travel so high, one other suggestion: would it help to make this conference part of your holiday plans? We live in a beautiful area, 20 minutes from the St. Lawrence River (the Thousand Island vacation area is world famous) and 40 minutes from the Adirondacks. If you are a baseball fan, the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, NY is only about 2 hours away. Ottawa is only 90 minutes by car; Montreal two and half hours and Toronto four and half. There is a good train service to all three cities from a station only 40 minutes away. If that is not enough, we are only 2 hours away from the Vermont border and lake Champlaign and onto the rest of New England!
In our own little village of Canton we can offer beautiful swimming in the river at Taylor Park (10 minutes away) or at the waterfall at Lamson Falls (20 minutes away).
The important message: as a grim as the fight against fluoridation has been (especially for those who have been doing this for over 30 years against such overwhelming odds) it can be fun, when you meet up with kindred souls and mix business with pleasure.
So lets have some FUN while we prepare for the most important phase ever in our monumental effort to overthrow this shortsighted and dangerous policy.
