Support needed for Quebec City

FAN Bulletin 769
March 7, 2007

Dear All,

A short while ago I received an urgent request for help from Jimmy Siles, our FAN Mobilization Team representative for Quebec City. We could be in for big breakthrough in Quebec, if Quebec City halts fluoridation, or we could be in for a great disappointment, if the city expands their fluoridation program to cover other local communities. The council is divided and they have recently been subjected to the usual “brainwashing” by health officials. Jimmy is asking for FAN members to contact Ann Bourget the leader of the RMG party, which represents the majority of the City Council, urging her to vote to end fluoridation in this city. Her email address is ann.bourget@ville.quebec.qc.ca; please cc Ms Sylvie Pigeon in charge of the water fluoridation file for the RMQ at sylvie.pigeon@ville.quebec.qc.ca and bcc Jimmy at jsiles@mediom.com and myself at paul@fluoridealert.org.

Ending fluoridation in Quebec City would be a huge victory for us and I hope you will support Jimmy’s request.

Jimmy’s full message is below.

Meanwhile, Michael (Connett) informs me that he has put the excellent 24 minute UK TV program “Don’t Swallow your Toothpaste” on Google. You can access it at here.

Even though this program was first broadcast on June 19, 1997 (Channel 4) it still remains an excellent summary of the fluoride issue. It was produced by Bob Woffinden (a free lance journalist who frequently writes for the Guardian newspaper and it was he who broke the Douglass cover-up story in the Observer). It provides an excellent summary of the fluoride issue. It features interviews with Phyllis Mullenix, myself, Dr. Peter Mansfield and Dr. Michael Lennon, president of the British Fluoridation Society (a taxpayers’ subsidized lobby for fluoridation), as well as members of a family impacted by dental fluorosis.

Paul Flack’s email address if you wish to congratulate him for the successful effort to get fluoridation halted in Mount Desert, Maine, is paul.mdwd@adelphia.net (see the last bulletin)

Hello Mr. Connett,

Here is an update on the current water fluoridation situation in Quebec.

1. Quebec city :

Thing are really moving fast in Quebec city.

The city’s council is now divided regarding water fluoridation benefits. We have recently learned that because of new water interconnections across the city’s pipes network (following municipal mergers), the city’s elected representatives will soon be voting on either terminate water fluoridation or extend it to the greater Quebec city community. Only half of the city’s residents are currently drinking fluoridated water, but this could now change any time. Last Friday, five Health department representatives were invited to present before the city’s council. During their presentation, these ‘experts’ explained how wonderful and safe water fluoridation is. We do not know how many representatives will change their mind following this presentation.

This is why I am asking FAN members to please write a message to Ms Anne Bourget, leader of the RMQ party, representing the majority at the city’s council. Please tell her not to change her mind about water fluoridation (most RMQ elected representatives were up to now against water fluoridation ). Here is her e-mail :

Ms Ann Bourget,
Leader of the RMQ
ann.bourget@ville.quebec.qc.ca

You can also send a message to Ms Sylvie Pigeon in charge of the water fluoridation file for the RMQ:

Sylvie Pigeon
sylvie.pigeon@ville.quebec.qc.ca

Please add my e-mail in BCC if you send a message : jsiles@mediom.com

Thank you in advance !

2. Montreal :

Regarding the city of Montreal, I finally received an official answer (original message in French) :

‘’Hello Mr. Siles,

last September, following a request made by Minister Philippe Couillard, the mayor of Montreal answered that Montreal will not fluoridate its water supply.

In its answer, Mr.Tremblay (Montreal’s mayor) explains that the scientific community is strongly divided regarding the health impacts of water fluoridation and that it is not up to the city of Montreal to make a decision based upon scientific pros or cons.

Further, if the Quebec government is totally convinced by water fluoridation benefits, it should act in a responsible manner and change the legislation, this would clearly indicate municipalities what to do.

The mayor has not yet received the Minister’s answer and we doubt that the government will dare embarking on such a process.

The Mayor has indeed sent a letter to the Minister. However, the council has not yet decided to make it public.

It’s something worth watching !

Thank you very much,
