FAN Bulletin 862
August 11, 2007
Dear All,
Excellent coverage of the Professionals’ Statement continues on web sites, and today we were covered in our first newspapers in the US and a CanWest News Service (a major wire service in Canada) story has already been picked up by the Vancouver Sun, the Montreal Gazette and the Ottawa Citizen. Rather than use up space here, I urge you to go our home page – and keep going there (!) - to check out a listing of all the news coverage as it occurs. Over the next few days Ellen will be linking to all of these. You can find them in three places on our web site http://www.FluorideAction.net :
1) If you click on the top story (August 9, 2007: More than 600 Professionals Call for an End to Water Fluoridation) you will find all the news coverage listed in the right hand side column.
2) click on Latest News (left hand column) on the home page.
3) click on FAN in the news, scroll down on the right hand column on the home page.
Today, our media officer Carol Kopf, received a message we had anticipated. It came from a mayor who supports fluoridation. He wrote:
“When I discussed the 600 professionals opposed to fluoridation with local dentists and doctors, their question to me was how many tens of thousands of Dentists and professionals support fluoridation.”
My response: Of course tens of thousands of dentists will sign a statement supporting fluoridation if instructed to do so by the ADA, but how many of them (or the ADA for that matter) would be able to offer a cogent scientific rebuttal to the scientific information presented in the Professionals’ Statement? Moreover, would a list of 10,000 dentists combined knowledge on this subject come close to the combined knowledge of so many very well informed professionals who signed the Professionals’ Statement, including three members of the National Research Council panel and prominent fluoride researchers from around the world?”
Now, see below a new listing of the over 600 professionals who have signed the statement (and we are still collecting and receiving names - current total is 624). Recognizing that this is an overwhelming list for people to plow through – and bless those who try – I have listed them below by country and by profession (for countries with more than 20 signers). I hope this will help people get a quicker and more comprehensive view of this historic achievement.
Inevitably, when converting such lists into different formats names get dropped, and other things get mangled. Thus I seek your input on this: are their names not on this list that should be? Have you any thoughts or additions to the short notes I have added on the fluoridation status of the countries from where we have signatures? When we have had your input we will then post it on our web site.

UNITED STATES (392)
Water fluoridation began in the US in 1945 with “demonstration trials” in Grand Rapids, Michigan and Newburgh, NY. Before either of these, or subsequent trials, were completed and before any health studies had been published, the practice was endorsed by the US Public Health Services, which has continued to aggressively promote the practice ever since. The torch today is carried by the Oral Health Division of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Almost daily this division is quoted as saying that fluoridation is “One of the top 10 public health achievements of the 20th Century” but it steadfastly ignores the studies which show that it is ineffective and the growing body of scientific evidence that fluoridation poses serious health threats, especially for certain vulnerable subsets of the population. The National Research Council published its landmark study (507 pages, over 1000 references) on fluoride’s toxicity on March 22, 2006. On March 28, 2006 the CDC Oral Health Division declared that this report was consistent with its policy of promoting fluoridation at 1 ppm.
The NRC panel (NRC,2006) concluded that the EPA’s safe drinking water standard (i.e. the maximum contaminant level goal, MCLG) of 4 ppm was unprotective of health and should be lowered. The panel recommended to the US EPA that they do a health risk assessment to determine a lower and safer MCLG. As of August 9, 2007 (some sixteen months after this recommendation was made) the US EPA Water Division appears to have taken no steps to do this, even though it was this division that a) requested the National Academies to do this study and b) three and half years and a lot of taxpayers’ money was spent to do the review.
3 Members of the NRC (2006) panel which reviewed the toxicology of fluoride (2 from US) have signed the Professionals’ Statement calling for an end to fluoridation worldwide:

THE NETHERLANDS (1)
In the 1960s fluoridation was begun in some major cities in the Netherlands (including Amsterdam) but this led to fierce resistance from the public, including many doctors. Eventually the practice was outlawed, thanks largely to the efforts of Dr. Hans Moolenburgh (signer below) and his colleagues. He has written a book about his experiences, and continues to help citizens in other countries confronted with this practice. Today, the Netherlands neither fluoridates its water nor its salt, and yet according to WHO figures has some of the lowest rates of tooth decay in 12-year olds in the world.

SWEDEN (2)
One city in Sweden was fluoridated, but a national campaign was waged in the 1970s and the practice was outlawed. One of the scientists who led this campaign was Dr. Arvid Carlsson, who later went on to win the Noble Prize for Medicine (2000). He has signed the Professionals’ statement. Today Sweden neither fluoridates its water nor its salt, and according to WHO figures tooth decay in their 12-year olds are among the lowest in the world.

UNITED KINGDOM (33)
Following the US example some communities in the UK were fluoridated in the 1950s. But despite government support, the practice has never really caught on. The percentage of the UK population drinking water has remained constant at about 10% for many years. 25 of 26 councils in Northern Ireland have rejected the practice. Currently no community there fluoridates. The Scottish parliament has rejected fluoridation.
