FAN Bulletin 874
August 27, 2007
Dear All,
In haste – I am shortly leaving on a trip which will take me to Maryland, Alberta, Italy and Spain – mostly fighting trash incinerators and promoting the alternatives.
As many of you know last April – with the help of readers setting up appointments – Dr. Bill Hirzy and I visited many Congressional offices and spoke with aides about the fluoridation issue. Most listened politely but seemed unaware of much what has been going on, especially the landmark NRC (2006) report.
Since then we have had the release of the statement signed by over 600 professionals (see the statement and list of signers on our home page http://www.FluorideAction.net ) and the ONLINE MESSAGE to Congress. On my return I am planning to go down to Washington, DC (Sept 24-27) and Bill and I are anxious to see if our efforts to date have made any difference.
Right now our total is over 900 messages. It would be helpful if by Sept 24 the total is double that. Cynthia Erville from Maryland is coordinating our appointments and if you have any strong connections to key people – especially if you think we have a good chance of meeting either of your Senators or your Representative in person – or if you have other important contacts in the DC area – please contact Cynthia at PErville@aol.com.
We do not expect this to be easy. We are up against the massive lobbying power of the ADA and the huge influence of the CDC but we have to keep trying. We have to take truth to power. Armed with the NRC (2006) report and the Professionals’ Statement we have that truth, but you can give us a little bit more of that people power. Please get every one you know to sign the online message (top item on our home page http://www.FluorideAction.net ) and follow up with phone calls and letters.
Alternatively find a good investigative journalist who will do a professional job reporting on this issue. Incredibly, the LA Times, which was so good at exposing the NIH scandals has provided pathetic coverage of the CDC scandal on this. They have published little to nothing on the NRC (2006) report; the Bassin cancer study and attempted cover-up; the professionals’ statement; the Lillie Center ethics charges against the CDC and nothing on the MWD’s decision to go ahead with fluoridating the water of another 18 million people – a decision taken under their very noses. No whisper of the EWG study nothing on Katheleen Thiessen’s testimony last week. Incredible!
Remember we want an end to fluoridation and we want Congressional hearings – which is a critical step in securing this end at the national level. Why? Because they have oversight on the CDC which continues to promote this practice, ignoring all the health warnings in the NRC report and the EPA which is dragging its feet on determining a new water standard/goal for fluoride (i.e. the MCLG = maximum contaminant level goal, currently set at 4 ppm). A new MCLG determined scientifically will kill fluoridation. It has been over 16 months since the NRC asked the EPA water division to do this.
Thanks again to you all for your continued efforts to end this foolish practice.
In my absence should you wish to contact me please do so through my wife Ellen at Ellen Connett, pesticides@fluoridealert.org.
