Correction to slide 76

FAN Bulletin 895A

December 8, 2007

Dear All,

Thanks to eagle eye Taylor Moore for spotting the typo in slide 76 of my power point presentation in the IOM debate. In village 3 of the Li et al., 2001 study, the level of fluoride was 1.00 – 1.06 ppm. The corrected slide is below.

Slide 76.

Li et al. (2001)

(Graphics: A table is given of the frequency of hip fractures in the elderly in six Chinese villages of differing levels of fluoride in each village’s drinking water. The frequencies are compared (odds ratio) to to he village (village 3) which had approximately 1 ppm in the water.)

Results:

Village 1: F level = 0.23 - 0.34 ppm  Odds ratio 0.99
Village 2: F level = 0.58 - 0.73 ppm  Odds ratio 1.12
Village 3: F level = 1.00 – 1.06 ppm  Odds ratio 1.00 (control)
Village 4: F level = 1.45 – 2.19 ppm  Odds ratio 2.13
Village 5: F level = 2.62 – 3.56 ppm  Odds ratio 1.75
Village 6: F level = 4.32 – 7.97 ppm  Odds ratio 3.26* (result is statistically significant)
