California report

FAN Bulletin 932

February 24, 2008

Dear All,

My short trip to Southern California involved three events: 1) a public meeting in the Santa Monica Public Library Auditorium on Saturday February 16; 2) a private reception organized by Cindy and David Emminger for Dr. Andrew Wakefield, on Sunday and 3) a live radio interview with Dr. Bill Thornton on a local radio station on Tuesday morning (see link below).

The Saturday meeting in Santa Monica

About 70 seriously concerned citizens attended this meeting from three of six Southern California counties. All of whom have been fluoridated by MWD fiat in November. In the first part of the meeting the citizens who had written to the Los Angeles County supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky asking for the evidence of “safety” which triggered the events discussed in the Topanga Messenger gave more details on their efforts.

In the second part of the meeting I discussed the resources, arguments and actions needed to defeat fluoridation. As far as the resources were concerned I ran through what is available from the FAN website  (the LATEST NEWS from around the world; the HEALTH DATABASE; the bibliography; the Ten top scientific developments of 2007; the videos on YouTube and Google and the “50 Reasons to Oppose Fluoridation” and other statements from opponents) and encouraged people to get more professionals to sign the Professionals’ Statement and more citizens to sign the Online Message to Congress. I stressed that every signer in California would result in their message going to Senator Barbara Boxer who chairs a very important Committee, which might well organize a Congressional hearing on this. As far as the arguments are concerned I provided a shorter version of the arguments I used in the debate with Professor Michael Lennon on the Isle of Man (November 20, 2007). For actions, I urged citizens from the six counties to  ”Network!  Network!!  NETWORK!!!”

In the third part the audience produced a lively set of questions and discussion points on how to end this misguided practice. For those who would like to be part of this Southern California coalition please contact Gene Burke. His contact details:

At the meeting I was delighted to meet Mike Rademaker a microbiologist who has been the scientific advisor to the group that won the vote against fluoridation in Manila in Northern California. Mike is young, knowledgeable and very enthusiastic. I think he will not only prove an asset locally but also statewide and nationally.

The reception for Dr. Andrew Wakefield

Gene Burke, who generously hosted my visit, accompanied me to Malibu to the reception held by Cindy and David Emminger. The reception was a fund raiser for Dr. Wakefield and other wonderful people who are helping to address the issue of the dramatic rise in autism over the last few years.  Dr. Wakefield is English (but now doing research in Texas) and lost his job because he refused to keep his mouth shut about his findings which implicated vaccinations as a causative agent in this terrible increase. He is a real hero (I have mentioned him in a previous bulletin) and it was wonderful to hear him and meet him in person. The CDC has the same conflict of interest issue with vaccination as it has with fluoridation. In both cases we have the same agency ? or group within the agency ? which promotes a policy also in charge of reviewing its safety!

At the meeting I was able to get some more professionals to sign the Professionals’ Statement calling for an end to fluoridation worldwide. As of today we have 1490 signers. I was also able to get another famous Hollywood personality to agree to sign a statement calling for an end to fluoridation. This person will be out of the country for a month and will issue a statement on returning. Stay tuned on this. Meanwhile, you might wish to tune into a radio interview I had with Dr. Bill Thornton.

The radio interview with Dr. Bill Thornton.

Listen to this 20-minute program which was broadcast live on KTYM AM at 9:00 am PT on Tuesday Feb 18.
