After 28 years, fluoridation has met it’s Waterloo in Ontario, Canada.
On October 25, voters in the Waterloo region (which includes Waterloo, St. Jacobs
and Elmira) said NO to fluoridation.

This was a tremendous victory as the Ontario Dental Association pulled out all the stops to get the vote and the daily newspaper, The Record, was pro-fluoridation.
Robert Fleming was the architect of this success with his group WaterlooWatch.

FAN’s New Campaign

Since 2006 the American Dental Association, dental researchers, and medical organizations throughout North America have recommended that infants not consume fluoridated water in an effort to reduce the risk of fluorosis. While dentists have been warned by the ADA, little has been done to warn the general public or government officials.
We believe that if a community adds fluoride to the water, it has the responsibility to at least disclose it to customers, and act to protect the most vulnerable population–our children–by warning parents about the risk of fluorosis.

To this end, the Fluoride Action Network has unveiled a new and exciting campaign to warn customers of fluoridated water systems not to give fluoridated water to children under 12 months of age. The campaign was announced by Dr. Paul Connett in Toronto on October 19, where legislation was introduced in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario by the Green Party. The legislation requires all public water systems that introduce fluoride into the drinking water place on all water bills the following warning statement:

“Your public water supply is fluoridated. Fluoridated water should not be used
or added to infant formula, foods, or drinks intended for babies 12 months of age
or younger in order to avoid dental fluorosis.”

We would like to see all fluoridated communities pass a version of
our model legislation, either at the state, county, or local level. To accompany our model legislation we have created an Infant Warning Overview that you are invited to share with family, friends, and local decision-makers.
If you would like start an infant warning campaign in your state or community, please contact FAN’s Campaign Manager, Stuart Cooper stuart@fluoridealert.org”>.

For more information on the dangers fluoride poses to children read our latest press release on the issue, and visit FAN’s health effects database page for infant exposure.

Other new developments

The Pennsylvania Delaware Valley School district announced it is ending its practice of giving students fluoride pills. See article in today’s Pocono Record.

There was a second local victory on October 25th, in Hoquiam, Washington, where the City Council voted against fluoridating their drinking water. Mayor Jack Durney proposed the plan to fluoridate the water, and the council had presentations in favor of fluoridation from several doctors and dentists as well as from the county Public Health Department. Countless residents attended the public hearing in opposition, armed with information from the Fluoride Action Network, and claimed another victory for the anti-fluoridation movement. Unfortunately, after the City Council’s rejection of fluoridation, Mayor Durney told the press that he still favored adding fluoride to the drinking water and would act unilaterally to make it happen.

Help the residents of Hoquiam, Washington stay fluoride-free, send a polite email to Mayor Durney mayor@cityofhoquiam.com”>mayor@cityofhoquiam.com about the dangers of fluoride.
